Letters to my Granddaughter: A Monos Island Childhood

Letters to my Granddaughter: A Monos Island Childhood

For young Joanne, Monos Island was never just a vacation spot—it was a world all its own, where the rhythm of the waves echoed the unbreakable ties of kinship and wonder.
In this intimate series of letters to her granddaughter Nuri, Joanne invites readers to journey back in time to an era untouched by modern distractions.
Relive the magic of family moments, the lessons that shaped her, and the simple joys of island life—where there was no electricity, no running water, yet no shortage of adventure or love.
More than a memoir, Letters to My Granddaughter is a tribute to the power of place and the bonds of family. It’s a reminder that even without the “comforts of home,” a life steeped in connection, nature, and tradition can be a little piece of heaven.
For readers who want to preserve the richness of a simpler time and pass its timeless lessons to the next generation.

About the author:
Joanne Mohammed is a proud Trinbagonian author who began her writing journey after retirement, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Inspired by her granddaughter’s request to “write a story about Ava and Sass,” Joanne created a vibrant world of adventures that has since grown from whimsical picture books into meaningful middle-grade novels.

She writes under the pen name Josie Sarana—a blend of her childhood nickname and her granddaughter’s middle name—as a tribute to the little girl who sparked it all.

The Ava and Sass collection spans three series and caters to children ages 4–12. Her picture books delight early readers ages 4–7, while her longer picture-book adventures bridge the 7–10 age group. Her middle-grade chapter books, written for ages 8–12, explore real-life themes with heart. Titles such as The Park Cleanup, The Digital Dilemma, and her newest release, The Grumbles and the Hidden Struggle, address issues of community, responsibility, resilience, and emotional well-being.

Across all her stories, Joanne writes with the hope of making a lasting difference. Her books weave messages of kindness, courage, and self-discovery—encouraging children to dream boldly, meet challenges with heart, and believe in the magic of possibility.

In addition to writing children’s literature, Joanne also publishes under her own name. Her memoir, Letters to My Granddaughter: A Monos Island Childhood, is a nostalgic collection of island memories that preserves family history while offering inspiration for future generations.
