Joanne Mohammed is a proud Trinbagonian author who began her writing journey after retirement, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Inspired by her granddaughter’s request to “write a story about Ava and Sass,” Joanne created a vibrant world of adventures that has since grown from whimsical picture books into meaningful middle-grade novels.
She writes under the pen name Josie Sarana—a blend of her childhood nickname and her granddaughter’s middle name—as a tribute to the little girl who sparked it all.
The Ava and Sass collection spans three series and caters to children ages 4–12. Her picture books delight early readers ages 4–7, while her longer picture-book adventures bridge the 7–10 age group. Her middle-grade chapter books, written for ages 8–12, explore real-life themes with heart. Titles such as The Park Cleanup, The Digital Dilemma, and her newest release, The Grumbles and the Hidden Struggle, address issues of community, responsibility, resilience, and emotional well-being.
