Description
Well known as a crafty, fun and mischievous character in African and Caribbean folklore, we’re introducing Anansi the Spider from the Just Because Foundation’s (JBF) point of view. This execution will be used as a vehicle to bring awareness of childhood cancer.
Anansi is a skilled 12-year-old footballer in the forest who is injured during a practice game due to a “bad tackle.” After ignoring the pain and swelling for a while, he finally brings it to his parents’ attention. Alarmed and quite concerned by what they see, they are forced to leave their young twin daughters J’nay and Jorja in the care of Granny Spider so they can seek medical attention for Anansi at the hospital.
Aimed primarily at children 6-12 years old, ‘Anansi goes to Hospital’ is the first of six engaging, educational and entertaining books that encourages you to “read out loud.”
These vividly illustrated books will explore themes such as friendship, health and wellness, the significance of family, the importance of being able to share your thoughts and feelings as well as an appreciation of what some children have to endure when they’re sick and have to be hospitalized.

Anansi Goes to Hospital is a delightful and heartwarming children’s book by Chevaughn Joseph that gently introduces young readers to the idea of visiting a hospital. Told through the adventures of Anansi, a spirited spider boy who loves football, this story uses playful language and engaging illustrations to tackle a subject that many children may find intimidating.
After Anansi injures his leg during a game with his forest friends, he must face a trip to the hospital. Like many children, he’s frightened—especially when it comes to the nurse needing to take his blood. But with a little courage (and a helpful lollipop or two), Anansi learns that hospitals are places for healing, and that nurses and doctors are there to help.
Beyond the main storyline, the book is rich with subtle, family-oriented lessons. It gently reinforces the values of family bonding—through scenes of praying together, eating as a family, and showing love and support in difficult moments. These elements add an emotional warmth and cultural richness that elevates the story from just an informative tale to a meaningful experience for both children and their caregivers.
Chevaughn Joseph has created a beautifully written book that balances education, empathy, and entertainment. It’s a wonderful tool for preparing children for medical visits and encouraging conversations around health, bravery, and family support.
Highly recommended for parents, teachers, and caregivers looking to guide children through life’s little challenges with kindness and confidence.
