At Scribbles and Quills, we have the pleasure of highlighting local authors who bring the unique beauty of Trinidad and Tobago to life through their work. This week, we’re thrilled to share our interview with the inspiring Aditi Sirinath. From poetry that captures love and loss to guiding young adults with thoughtful prose, Aditi’s works are a heartfelt journey into life’s truths.
Let’s dive into her thoughts, inspirations, and advice for aspiring writers.
Can you tell us about your books and their themes?
Aditi: My poetry collections, You and Me: A Poem Collection, You, the Moon, explore love, loss, and the wonders of the world. On the other hand, Diary of the Happiest Girl Alive is a short prose guide for teenagers and young adults navigating life’s challenges. At its core, I want readers to focus on becoming their happiest and best selves. When you aim for that, everything else falls into place—though I know it’s easier said than done. I hope my work inspires readers on their journeys.
What inspired you to write these stories?
Aditi: Poetry feels like it’s part of me. Life itself inspires my writing. I’m always delighted when my poems remind people that human emotions are universal, transcending time and place.
How does your Trinidadian background influence your writing?
Aditi: I firmly believe we live in the most beautiful country in the world. Trinidad and Tobago’s natural beauty and our warm, vibrant culture inspire me deeply. Our diverse celebrations, tolerance, and unity shape my perspective. Even on a bad day, stepping outside to see the trees and flowers can lift your spirits, and I try to capture that feeling in my poetry.
What was your writing process like?
Aditi: I write poetry when inspiration strikes and edit during moments of quiet reflection. Diary of the Happiest Girl Alive was more intensive; it took years of compiling, editing, and rewriting.
Did you face challenges while writing?
Aditi: Writing Diary of the Happiest Girl Alive was my biggest challenge. It required effort, research, and persistence. For me, prayer and perseverance were key. Putting yourself out there as an author is daunting, but I believe writers are blessed and brave. Remember, not every piece will resonate with everyone, but it will find its intended audience.
Who inspires your work?
Aditi: Rumi is my greatest inspiration, both in life and in writing. For Diary of the Happiest Girl Alive, I also drew from self-help books and studied major religions, which influenced my work significantly.
What message do you hope readers take away from your books?
Aditi: I hope readers learn to love themselves and their lives as deeply as they love the people and things they cherish most. To quote Rumi, “Wherever you are, and whatever you do, be in Love.”
Can you share a memorable moment from your writing journey?
Aditi: A truly special moment was when the Heritage Library of Trinidad and Tobago accepted all my books into their collection. Knowing my work contributes to our country’s literary landscape fills me with joy. I imagine someone in the distant future discovering my books and getting a glimpse of life in our time.
What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
Aditi: To aspiring writers, I’d quote the Greek philosopher Epictetus: “If you wish to be a writer, write!” Follow your heart and start writing. These days, it’s easier than ever to access free resources online to guide you. Platforms like YouTube and Google are invaluable.
What’s next for you?
Aditi: I’m working on the final edits of my next book, Letters. It’s a poetry collection, my favourite style of writing. For sneak peeks, you can visit my Facebook page, Aditi Sirinath, Author.
What’s your favourite part of being in the Trinidadian literary community?
